Imagine a Canada... | National Centre for Truth & Reconciliation
Sadie, Sarah, Ema, and Madison (Class of 2026) worked on a project in their grade 11 year to expand our school garden with a Medicine Wheel Garden. This garden was inspired by Indigenous principles reflecting the interconnectedness of life. They presented a Three Sisters companion planting workshop at Lord Kitchener, created informational signs for the garden, and researched native plants. In April, Lori Snyder (Lori Ann Bird) a Metis Herbalist Educator, led a 3-day workshop on local plants around our school, where they made salves and incense and connected with nature.
To fund the project, Sadie, Sarah, Ema, and Madison applied for the Imagine a Canada Grant, which recognizes student-led initiatives for a reconciled Canada. Their project was one of 15 projects selected. On May 23, they attended an Honoring Ceremony in Winnipeg at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, where they gave a wonderful speech describing their project. Much to their dismay, many of the Mini teachers were streaming the ceremony live in our classrooms. They have done a great job with the Medicine Wheel Garden, and we will be continuing our journey.
